Clinical Consultation*

Have you ever found yourself feeling overwhelmed by and hopeless about some patients and your ability to help them?

Do you ever wish you had an experienced mentor to talk to about these situations and to brainstorm ideas and approaches to the problem(s) at hand?

If so, it might be time for a clinical consultation session with me, Dr. Amy Alexander.

I have a lot of experience with clients who have complex, medical and mind-body conditions and “dis-ease” and I really enjoy helping beginner to advanced clinicians of any stripe find a way forward with challenging clinical situations by:

  • working with feelings of frustration, discouragement or overwhelm at work;

  • finding creative ways to work with behaviourally complex or “treatment-resistant” client situations;

  • navigating challenging mind-body, “functional” or medically-unexplained client presentations or symptoms; and/or

  • exploring ways to support patients with trauma and/or chronic pain and illness presentations that feel overwhelming.

In addition to being a physician and medical psychotherapist (IFS, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy and EMDR/Brainpotting) and Canadian Armed Forces Medical Officer veteran, I also have advanced training in:

  • Internal Family Systems (Level 3 with IFS-I, Somatic IFS (S. McConnell) and Trauma-Informed IFS (with C. West))

  • Relational Intelligence, Level 1 (with F. Le Doze)

  • Rehabilitation Medicine and Pain Management (via the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine graduate certificate program)

  • Medical Acupuncture (450 + hours via Harvard University and AcuMed)

  • Protocols for Cancer and Chronic Pain Mind-Body Medicine (via the Harvard Benson-Henry Institute for Mind-Body Medicine)

  • Therapeutic Yoga (450+ hours)

  • Functional Medicine (including all Advanced Practice Modules offered by the Institute for Functional Medicine)

  • Public Health Promotion (via a Masters of Public Health with the University of Toronto’s Dalla Lana School of Public Health)

  • and more . . .

I also teach other MDs/NPs about trauma, trauma-informed care and clinical communication via the Psychotherapy Training Program of the Medical Psychotherapy Association Canada (MDPAC).
